We advise students at Akkon University (outgoings) on planning internships and semesters abroad and provide information on funding opportunities and scholarships. International mobility can be promoted in various ways, e.g., through the Erasmus+ or PROMOS funding programs.
With the Erasmus+ program, the European Union promotes the academic mobility of students (studying and internships abroad) in all phases in currently 33 countries. For many years, internships and staff mobility for teaching and continuing education purposes have also been promoted.
The PROMOS funding program (Program to Increase the Mobility of Students at German Universities), financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), also serves to promote the worldwide mobility of students and doctoral candidates at German universities. It is intended to offer students and doctoral candidates whose plans or destination do not fit into any of the structured programs offered by the DAAD or Erasmus+ the opportunity to spend time abroad. It also encourages institutions to set their own priorities in the area of stays abroad.

Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ program is of essential importance to Akkon University’s internationalization strategy. It is the European Union’s central education program for promoting the mobility of individuals and cooperation between educational institutions. The program facilitates exchanges between students, pupils, young people, teachers, and university staff, and also offers many other opportunities for cross-border projects to promote mutual understanding in Europe and worldwide.
Erasmus Charter
In 2022, the university successfully applied for the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) and was thus approved to participate in the Erasmus+ program generation 2021-2027. In its European Policy Statement (EPS), Akkon University commits itself to the core themes of European higher education and the priorities of the new Erasmus program generation. The EPS describes the university’s overall strategy and the concrete implementation of the program principles.
Erasmus+ offers
To help you find out about the wide range of offers in the current Erasmus+ 2021-2027 program generation, the various websites of the National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation at the DAAD provide a comprehensive overview and detailed information. You can also read the Erasmus Student Charter.
In the 2021-2027 program generation, Akkon University focuses on the KA131 program line “Mobility of Individuals” with program countries that promote the following mobility measures:
- Student mobility for study purposes (SMS)
- Student mobility for internship purposes (SMP)
- Staff mobility for teaching and training purposes (STA)
- Staff mobility for continuing education and training purposes (STT)
- Blended Intensive Programs (BIP)
The brochure series “How to…” provides an overview of the topics “Studying abroad,” “Internships abroad,” and “Language courses & summer schools abroad.” You can download them here:
Internship abroad
Erasmus+ supports compulsory internships or voluntary internships lasting between two and twelve months at a host institution in another European country. Internships in all EU countries, the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Serbia, the Republic of North Macedonia, and Turkey are eligible for funding. Depending on the program country, funding can amount to up to €750. In this video, you will learn what you need to consider when doing an internship abroad. Further information on internships abroad is available on the DAAD website.
Please submit the following documents to the International Office at Akkon University at least two months before the start of your internship:
- Completed and signed learning agreement
- Current certificate of enrollment
- Short letter of motivation (1-2 pages)
- Short tabular resume
- Proof of German language skills, at least level B2
The International Office will then send you the grant agreement with the approved funding for you to sign. The original must be submitted.
Here you will also find more information on the topics of “Staying abroad with children„, “Accessible stays abroad“ and “Stays abroad for students and graduates with fewer opportunities„.
Under certain conditions, up to four additional travel days may be granted for each mobility program when using sustainable means of transport. The additional travel days cannot be determined on a flat-rate basis by the university for all participants, but a categorization according to, for example, distance or choice of transport can be used to facilitate organization. Funding conditions for all mobility activities with funding rates can be found here.
At the beginning of each semester, there is an information event on opportunities for stays abroad. For further information, click here.
Studying abroad
For many students, studying abroad is a decisive step on the path to academic and personal development. For each study cycle (i.e., bachelor’s or master’s program), you can receive funding for an Erasmus+ study abroad program lasting a minimum of two months and a maximum of twelve months. You can also complete a semester abroad at a partner institution outside Europe. A semester of study outside Europe can be funded with a PROMOS scholarship. In this video, you will learn what you need to consider when studying abroad.
You should choose courses at the host university that can be credited at Akkon University. The exact amounts and criteria for financial assistance may vary depending on the program country. Students should therefore inform themselves about the financial aspects of studying abroad at an early stage and also consider other sources of funding such as scholarships or similar.
If you have any questions about the application process, please contact the International Office.
- Visiting lectureships at partner universities (STA), (see video “Teaching abroad”),
- Visits by foreign company representatives to German universities (STA2), and
- Further education and training measures for university staff at universities and/or companies (STT) (see video “University staff abroad”).
Erasmus+ funding is available for periods of two to 60 consecutive days. Staff mobility for further education and training purposes can include the following:
- Work shadowing
- Job shadowing (individual)
- Study visits
- Participation in curriculum development (lecturers)
- Participation in workshops and seminars (Staff weeks)
- Participation in language courses
Funding conditions for lecturers:
- The duration of an Erasmus+ guest lecture is at least two days excluding travel time and a maximum of two months including travel time.
- Mobility for teaching purposes requires a teaching load of 8 hours per full week (for 4 weeks = 4 x 8 hours).
- For mobility periods exceeding one week (5 working days or 7 calendar days), the required teaching load is calculated on a pro rata basis (formula: 8 hours / 5 days * number of additional days).
- Teaching stays for which travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed by third parties are not eligible for financial support.
- A mobility grant from Erasmus+ funds does not include any insurance coverage. You must therefore ensure that you have adequate insurance coverage for the duration of your stay abroad.
Longer funding periods (up to a maximum of two months) are only possible after consultation with the International Office. Due to the ERASMUS funding available, financial support is limited to a maximum of 14 funding days plus travel allowance. Recipients receive fixed financial grants for their stay abroad (between €140 and €180 per day), depending on the destination country. One day for arrival and one day for departure can also be included in the funding (see Distance calculator).
Application
The following documents must be submitted to the International Office at least two months before the start of the mobility period:
- A short letter of motivation
- The completed and signed Mobility Agreement (for teaching / for training)
You will then receive the Grant Agreement from the International Office with the approved funding for signature. The original must be submitted.
PROMOS
PROMOS – Program to increase the mobility of students at German universities
The PROMOS program is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It promotes the mobility of students and doctoral candidates at German universities. The PROMOS program supports study, practical training, and language stays worldwide, as well as study and competition trips.
Erasmus+ and PROMOS: Please note that study visits and internships in program countries are not funded through PROMOS if funding through Erasmus+ is available. Therefore, please apply for Erasmus+ funding.
Funding in the Erasmus+ area is only possible in exceptional cases through PROMOS:
- An Erasmus+ cooperation (Inter-Institutional Agreement) only exists for a specific department (or exclusively for a specific program track).
- The Erasmus+ quota for a department has been exhausted.
- A further Erasmus+ stay abroad is not possible.
Further information can be found on the DAAD website: www.daad.de.
Application deadlines
- November 15 for projects starting between January and the end of June of the following year
- May 15 for projects starting between July and the end of December of the current year
As a student at Akkon University, you can apply to the International Office for a PROMOS scholarship to support study visits and internships outside the Erasmus area. The annual call for applications (application deadline December 31) for funding in the following calendar year takes place at the beginning of the respective winter semester.
Study and internship stays are funded under PROMOS for a duration of 1 to 6 months, depending on the type of stay. PROMOS can also be used for final theses and student research projects in companies and universities. The amount of the scholarship is based on the DAAD flat rates. The funding granted depends on the total number of applicants and the approved application amount.
To be eligible for PROMOS funding, you must be a regular student enrolled at Akkon University and have German citizenship. You are also eligible to apply if you:
- are equivalent to German students in accordance with § 8 (1) No. 2 ff., (2), (2a) and (3) BAföG – in this context, the wording of the law applies (available at: www.das-neue-bafoeg.de)
or
